Watamu
A 20 minute drive south of Malindi takes you to beautiful white beaches encompassing Blue Lagoon, Turtle Bay, Whale Island and Mida Creek. Accommodation ranges from quality beach hotels to rented houses to hostels. This area is still undeveloped compared to other tourist areas along the coast and consequently is one of the popular places to be. There are a few places to shop; a few restaurants; a post office, bank and a petrol station. The Watamu Turtle Watch is an active community-based marine conservation organization for the protection of endangered sea turtles and the environment. There are 5 known species of turtles in the area. Visitors are welcomed at the WTW centre along the beach. There is a fitness and yoga centre along the beach where you can enjoy wellbeing and holistic programmes. Deep sea fishing is very popular from this location with top quality sports fishing boats.
Visit the Bio-Ken Laboratory and snake farm which houses the largest collection of snakes in East Africa. Scuba diving is an all time favourite with spectacular diving spots. Nearby the 14th century ruins of Gedi town and Gedi Museum is worth a visit and the Kipepeo Butterfly Farm next door, initially a UNDP funded project for benefit of the rural community. Finally the Arabuko Sokoke Forest Reserve is the largest remaining dry coastal forest which houses a variety of rare trees; plants; birds and some wildlife. There are guides to take you around and explain this beautiful section of natural forest reserve.
